Barbara J. Fiala became the 6th Executive of Broome County on January 1st, 2005. She is the first woman in county history to be elected County Executive. She was also the first woman ever elected to county-wide office when she was first elected County Clerk in November, 1997. She is a 40 year public servant that has worked her way up through county government to become its chief executive.
Executive Fiala is a life-long resident of Broome County and the City of Binghamton. She grew up in the City’s 7th District and is the youngest of nine children born to Arthur and Mary Testani. The County Executive graduated from the former North High School. She is proud to be a graduate of both colleges here in our community. The County Executive holds a bachelors of science and associates degree from Binghamton University and Broome Community College, respectively.
A belief in public service and serving the community run strong in the Fiala family. The County Executive’s husband served many years as a Ward Chairperson. Her son, Anthony served two terms as a Binghamton City Councilman and two as its Council President.
The County Executive is currently second Vice-President of the New York State County Executive’s Association and a member of the County Executives of America Board. She is a proud member of the Sons of Italy in America and a 2004 Binghamton High School Distinguished Graduate Honoree. The County Executive is also an active member of the Binghamton Breakfast Rotary Club.
The County Executive and her husband Anthony have been married over 40 years. They live in Binghamton’s First Ward. They have two sons. Her oldest son, Anthony Jr. lives in Binghamton’s First Ward. Her youngest son, V. James, lives in Scranton, PA with his wife MaryLou. The County Executive is the proud grandmother of two boys, Nicholas and Nathan.
