The Spirit Of Delta Makes Appearance In Greater Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Greater Binghamton Airport and Delta Connection are pleased to announce the arrival of Delta's DC-3, Ship 41, on August 7th at the Greater Binghamton Airport. The aircraft will be visiting from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM as a part of Delta Air's celebration of 75 years of commercial flight. At the conclusion of Ship 41's stay, members of the media and the local community will board the plane for a demonstration flight to State College, PA.

On June 17, 2004 Delta Air Lines celebrated 75 years of commercial flight. The anniversary was marked with a reenactment of the company's maiden passenger flight which took place on June 17, 1929 from Monroe, LA to Atlanta, GA. The reenacted flight was carried out in the newly restored DC-3. This particular aircraft was originally purchased from funds Delta employees, retirees and community partners had voluntarily contributed. The plane was initially flown in the 1940's, and after a brief period of restoration continues in flight today. Ship 41 was one of the original five DC-3s purchased and was the first commercial aircraft to make passenger travel profitable. It revolutionized the commercial aviation business. The legendary DC-3 used in the 1940's and in the reenacted flight will be the same plane visiting our area.

Ship 41, was retired in 1958. This DC-3 made its home in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1991 to 1993 and was then flown back to the United States to undergo several years of refurbishment. After its restoration the aircraft was given the name The Spirit of Delta. This historic aircraft has been traveling the Delta system in honor of the 75th anniversary, and will be making stops all across the country. The Greater Binghamton Airport is honored to be on the list of destinations that will be visited by The Spirit of Delta.
