Executive Fiala Announces Campaign to Aid Katrina Victims

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala announces a Broome County campaign to raise money for Red Cross disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"The devastation is so widespread and the need is going to be so great, we felt it was important to do something to help," said Barbara J. Fiala, Broome County Executive. "We will ask our employees to donate as much as they can but we are also encouraging other governments, municipalities, private businesses and schools to do the same."

County Executive Fiala was joined by Cindy Gordineer, Executive Director of the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross, for a news conference Wednesday morning to talk about the Red Cross' need for donations and the role of the Red Cross both nationally locally during this catastrophic event.

Gordineer says local Red Cross chapters can supply two very important things for this disaster; money and volunteers. She says some volunteers have already been deployed and others are waiting to be called.

"The people of this community are always generous when a natural disaster strikes and we believe they will be generous once again," said Cindy Gordineer, Executive Director, Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross. "We thank the County Executive for spearheading this county campaign and we welcome any support this community can provide."

If individuals in the community would also like to make a donation, they can contact the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross at 607.785.7207 or log onto the local chapter's web site at southerntier.redcross.org/.
