Volunteers Sought for 2002 Riverbank Clean-Up
The future of Broome County's most valuable resources depends on the stewardship of its citizens.
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is sponsoring it's 17th annual Riverbank Clean-Up in Broome County on Saturday, October 12 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Teams of volunteers are still needed to clean sections along the Susquehanna, Chenango and Tioughnioga rivers and their tributaries in Broome County. This event is part of the International Coastal Clean-up effort sponsored internationally by The Ocean Conservancy and in New York State by the American Littoral Society.
In 2001, over 400 volunteers collected 10.6 tons of garbage from Broome County's waterways from 26 sites. If you know of a location that needs cleaning or if your property is adjacent to a waterway and you are willing to allow volunteers access for streamside/riverside clean up, please call or email the EMC. The EMC will arrange for each group to have garbage bags, gloves and municipal trash pick-up. Volunteer registrations will be accepted until Friday, September 27. You can contact the EMC at 607.778.2116 or jlcorey. For more information on the Riverbank Clean-Up and the EMC visit the Broome County website at www.gobroomecounty.com.
