$1M State Grant Secured for Phase III of the Public Side Improvement Program at the Greater Binghamton Airport

BINGHAMTON, NY - Committed to improving the quality of life in Broome County, Senator Tom Libous and County Executive Barbara J. Fiala, announced that a $1M state grant has been secured that will be a benefit to the travelers using the Greater Binghamton Airport. This New York State Transportation grant will be used to make much needed renovations to the long term and short term public parking lots at the airport as well as its rental car parking lot.

Slated to begin in the spring of 2007, the parking lot improvement project will include resurfacing the parking lots, improving lighting, displaying helpful directional/locator signage, and installing modern/exit lane equipment.

“We are committed to not only maintaining a first class airport for our local citizens but we also want to be sure that visitors to our region have a positive first impression of our community,” said Senator Tom Libous. “This positive first impression, which many times occurs right at our airport, is an essential tool in our efforts to attract new businesses to our region and encourage visitors to relocate to the Southern Tier of New York,” added Libous.

The parking lot improvements project is the final segment of a three phase program to improve the convenience and aesthetics of the pubic side of the airport. The first phase of this program, the terminal rehabilitation project, was completed in 2000. The 2nd phase of the program began this year and it entails improving the airport’s entrance road and outdoor walkways. The parking lot improvements project, which is the last major part of this program, is expected to be completed late in the fall of 2007.

“We are aggressively pursuing opportunities to improve the overall travel experience for the users of our airport,” said County Executive Barbara J. Fiala. “With this support from Senator Libous, we will be able to make these much needed improvements to our parking lots, which will allow us to provide an even better product to our customers,” added Fiala.

Currently, the Greater Binghamton Airport offers service from 4 of the nation’s 7 largest airlines with nearly 30 flights per day (approximately 50% of these flights utilize new regional jet aircraft) providing convenient service to most domestic and international destinations. The airlines currently serving the Greater Binghamton area include Delta Connection, Northwest Airlink, United Express and US Airways Express. From these airlines, non-stop service is available to Atlanta, Detroit, Washington DC, and Philadelphia, respectively.
