October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
BINGHAMTON, NY - On Monday, September 29th at 2:00 p.m., Broome County Executive, Jeffrey P. Kraham will declare October Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Broome County. Mr. Kraham will present the declaration to Patricia Ericksen, Psy.D., Executive Director of the SOS Shelter, Inc. at a ceremony to be held at the Broome County Public Library, 185 Court Street, Binghamton, NY.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month was instituted as a result of the efforts of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. It was first observed in October of 1987 to help raise awareness in our community and across the nation regarding the negative impact of domestic violence in our society. The costs to families and society at large are enormous from a physical, emotional and financial standpoint.
For the past 24 years many local agencies, both public and private have been working tirelessly to bring victims assistance and outreach programs, batterers intervention and the community heightened awareness of the seriousness of this severe social offense.
Many groups and will be highlighting domestic violence awareness in October, through seminars, educational displays and community events.
