Proper Hand Washing
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Health Department wants to remind you that washing your hands is your first line of defense against the spread of germs and illness. The few seconds you spend at the sink could save you trips to your health care provider's office.
Most diseases are spread through contact with body fluids. A good example is the common cold. If a person has a cold and blows his or her nose, then touches a door handle, the cold virus is spread to the handle. Others may open the same door, then touch their eyes, nose or mouth, and catch the same virus. The chance of infection would be much lower if people washed their hands more frequently.
"To minimize the spread of germs, make frequent hand washing a rule for everyone," said Diane O'Hora, Director of Health Education for the Broome County Health Department. Wash your hands:
- before eating and cooking, and after touching raw foods;
- after using the bathroom;
- after cleaning the house;
- after touching animals, including house pets;
- after visiting, or taking care of sick friends or relatives;
- after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; and
- after being outside (playing, gardening, walking the dog, etc.)
"Make sure to wash your hands properly," said Ms. Chytilo. "Demonstrate and practice this routine with your children so they learn the importance of this good habit."
Follow these simple steps;
- Wash your hands in warm water.
- Use soap and lather up for 10 to 15 seconds. Rub your hands together, and make sure you clean between your fingers and under your nails. And, don't forget your wrists!
- Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.
"Don't underestimate the power of hand washing," said Ms. Chytilo. "Hand washing is the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection."
