The NAMES Project started in 1987 to provide a creative means for remembering those who died from AIDS; to illustrate the enormity of the AIDS epidemic; to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS; to assist with HIV prevention education; and to raise funds for community based AIDS organizations. A quilt is composed of eight separate panels, each panel representing a person who died of AIDS. As of May 2006, there were 5,748 blocks, each block containing eight panels. More information about the Names Project and the Quilt can be found at: www.aidsquilt.org.
