AIDS Quilts Coming to Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Tri-County HIV Care Network is bringing four panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt from the Names Project-Syracuse to be on display at the Broome County Library, 185 Court Street, Binghamton, NY from December 2, 2003 through December 7, 2003. An Opening Ceremony is planned at 10 A.M. on December 2nd at the Library on Court Street. Participants include Rev. Kit White and community persons who will discuss how the AIDS Quilts have affected their lives.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a memorial to remember the men, women and children lost to this epidemic, and each panel tells an individual story. Today the Quilt has more than 44,000 panels and is the largest ongoing community arts project in the world.

In 1987 the National Names Project Foundation was established with a mission to bring an end to AIDS. The Foundation uses the Quilt to:

  • Illustrate the enormity of the AIDS epidemic.
  • Increase public awareness of AIDS.
  • Provide a creative means for remembrance and healing.
  • Assist with HIV prevention education.
  • Raise funds for community-based AIDS service organizations.
