Broome County Braces for Another Storm
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County residents are being urged to prepare for yet another significant weather event. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Friday afternoon and evening. The NWS also warns residents that the strong storm that will bring the high winds is also going to bring heavy rain and possibly snow to the region.
Broome’s Deputy County Executive Pat Brennan and Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan held a news conference Thursday afternoon to stress the need for local residents to pay close attention to the developing weather situation and to prepare accordingly.
“As we just saw a couple of weeks ago, a few inches of rain can be devastating if it causes flash floods,” said Mayor Ryan. “We don’t want anyone surprised by this storm and we are just asking that you take the necessary precautions to prepare your family in case this storm reaches its full potential.”
“We’re encouraging people to prepare for power outages in case the high winds knock down power lines and we are asking people to try to limit their travel during the height of the storm,” said Patrick Brennan, Deputy County Executive. “Our crews will be standing by and ready to respond to any problem areas but it would make things a little easier if people stayed off the roads.”
Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible which may result in flooding problems. National Weather Service officials caution that ground moisture levels remain high and that main stream and creek channels are in poor condition because of the November 16th flash floods. Residents should simply pay attention to updated weather forecasts and news reports.
