Book Recycling Fair A Huge Success
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Jeffrey P. Kraham sends thanks to all the volunteers and residents who made the 2000 Broome County Book Recycling Fair such a huge success.
Over 100,000 books were collected November 1 through November 4, half of which were redistributed on November 10 and 11 and the rest sent for recycling rather than landfilling. Included in this total are 2,500 textbooks that were distributed by Free Read and 3,800 textbooks that will be sent to a Bronx Public School.
"The success of this year's event has made it clear that Broome County residents appreciate and value books as a wonderful resource. Residents have shown their support for furthering literacy and for reusing good conditioned books, rather than seeing them thrown away," Kraham said. "It's evident from the response of the public that this program is a valuable and well anticipated event in Broome County."
In addition to book donations, many residents gave freewill donations for children's literacy programs. Over four hundred dollars was collected and will be shared amongst the three non-profit agencies who assisted the Division of Solid Waste Management, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Environmental Management Council organize the Fair.
Organizers ask that those residents who missed this year's event to hold onto their old books until next year. To donate good books (new or in excellent condition), call Free Read at 607.724.1179 or contact your local library.
