Executive Fiala Sets Sights for 2006
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala is looking forward to the New Year. The County Executive is pleased with the accomplishments of the past year and she is happy with the foundation that has been laid for future projects.
“I look forward to my second year as Broome County Executive and I am anxious to keep moving my ideas forward including; government accountability, fiscal responsibility, stable tax rates, open government, sharing services and creating an environment that promotes economic development,” said Executive Fiala. “It was a busy first year and I met a lot of people and I look forward to the new challenges and the new faces I will encounter in 2006.”
Fiala points to a number of accomplishments in 2005 including, a stable budget with a reasonable 3.5% tax increase, getting local governments involved in a dialogue on Sharing Services, taking over management of En Joie Golf Course to promote economic development, reorganizing Broome County economic developments efforts to focus on a one point of contact philosophy and the need for a sustainable revenue source to support brownfield reclamation and economic development initiatives, and the realization of the Intermodal project for Downtown Binghamton, just to name a few.
“I would rather be criticized for doing something than criticized for doing nothing,” said Fiala. “This community is in a situation where you have to be willing to take some risks in order to get things moving again. If we do nothing, we are doomed to economic stagnation, loss of population, decreased services and skyrocketing taxes. I’m not willing to let that happen on my watch.”
In 2006, Fiala says she looks forward to working with county lawmakers on several projects including the reconstruction of the George Harvey Justice Building, the approval of a new nursing home, construction of the Intermodal, sharing more services with the City of Binghamton and other municipalities, hopefully securing the BC Open for the En-Joie Golf Course and the entire community and achieving some tangible successes in the county’s economic development initiatives.
Executive Fiala says she is also excited and looking forward to celebrating Broome County’s Bicentennial. She hopes all of Broome County’s municipalities, service groups and schools join Broome County’s Bicentennial celebration and even plan a few celebrations of their own.
