Compost Bins Now Available

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management is launching a home composting program to enable residents to care for the earth in their own backyards and reduce the amount garbage going into the landfill. Through this program, residents can purchase the Earth Machine™, a home composter for only $36.00 plus tax.

“The county landfill receives an estimated 180,000 tons of waste per year,” said Executive Barbara J. Fiala. “Homeowners who choose to compost reduce their waste 25%-40% on average, aiding to reduce the burden placed on the landfill.”

Homeowners can use the Earth Machine™ to compost fruit, vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters from the kitchen. This fall, users could add layers of collected yard waste like mulched leaves, dried grass, garden plants, old potting soil and soft plant stems from the garden. After three months, with a little maintenance and care, the compost contained in the unit is broken down naturally into humus, which homeowners can use to enrich the soil in their gardens.

“In 2005, the landfill took in a total of 177,748 tons of garbage,” stated Debra Smith, Materials Recovery Manager. “Based on EPA studies, composters can divert approximately 650lbs of waste per year.”

The Earth Machine™ unit features an efficient round design which controls, moisture, heat and ventilation. The twist locking lid system and side vents, are large enough to allow air circulation but small enough to be rodent resistant. The strong twist pegs allow owners to fasten the unit securely to the ground. To view the unit go to http://www.earthmachine.com
