Are you interested in hearing what teens are telling us about their use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and their high risk behaviors? The KYDS Coalition, along with Binghamton University, will be presenting the results of our 2006 Prevention Needs Assessment Survey, as well as reviewing what we as a Coalition are doing to address the needs of our community. Our hope is to educate, inform, and continue a dialogue within the community.
The KYDS (Keeping Youth Drug Free and Safe) Coalition is an organization that is committed to reducing substance abuse and high risk behaviors among the youth in our area. The Coalition is comprised of local school districts and a wide variety of agencies and organizations within our community. The following school districts are currently involved with the KYDS Coalition: Chenango Forks Central School, Johnson City Central School, Maine-Endwell Central School, Newark Valley Central School, Susquehanna Valley Central School, Union-Endicott Central School, Vestal Central School, and Whitney Point Central School.
Every two years the KYDS Coalition administers a survey to students in the participating school districts, the Children's Home and Broome-Tioga BOCES. The survey is designed to assess adolescent substance use, anti-social behavior, and the risk and protective factors that can predict these problem behaviors. The Coalition can then work together with the community to increase the protective factors and decrease the risk factors through proactive programs and activities. By enhancing community collaboration and increasing awareness of youth substance abuse, we seek to create a healthier, safer community for the leaders of tomorrow.
