NYS Emergency Management Office 2008 Flood Mitigation Grant ProgramBINGHAMTON, NY - The New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) has announced, subject to FEMA approval, the availability of approximately $650,000 to local governments statewide for mitigation projects with, “strong educational and training components dealing with watershed management and flood issues.”

Applications for these mitigation funds will be evaluated for their effectiveness in educating the public about mitigation programs and opportunities, training local officials and volunteers about measures and techniques proven to reduce the loss of lives and properties from disasters, and enhancing previous and current mitigation projects. SEMO will provide up to 75% of the total project cost, and a minimum 25% cost share will be provided by the applicant community.

Eligible applicants include counties, towns, villages and cities statewide. Applicants must have a FEMA-approved and adopted multi-hazard mitigation plan in place by the application deadline, or have been part of a collaborative effort that produced a FEMA-approved plan that was adopted locally. To be considered for a SEMO Flood Mitigation Grant, eligible applicants must participate in a two-part application process. Applicants must complete and submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) SEMO via fax @ 518-322-4983 no later than 5:00 pm April 16, 2008 and mail the original signed version to SEMO, also postmarked no later than April 16, 2008. The SEMO mitigation staff will review submitted LOIs, make an eligibility determination, and advise potential applicants whether a more detailed application should be submitted.
