Snow Route Information

Riding BC Transit during Winter Weather

The Broome County Department of Public Transportation is considered an essential service in Broome County Government.  When the weather turns bad, B.C. Transit will make every effort to keep buses running to get you safely to your destination.   If you plan to take B.C. Transit during inclement weather, here's what you need to know.

Get the latest service information

Conditions can change quickly. Before you leave, get the latest updates on snow routes by:

  •  Checking the service alerts page on www.ridebctransit.com/transit
  • Calling Customer Service line at 607.778.1692 (please be patient, phone lines are busy during inclement weather).

Riding the bus: what to expect

BC Transit buses will follow regular routing so long as the streets are safe for bus travel. If the streets and roads are not safe for bus travel, buses will detour as situations arise.  Your bus may not serve part of its route if the driver determines with management approval that the roadway is too dangerous to drive on.  We'll make every effort to keep you up to date on www.ridebctransit.com/transit  and post details as they become available.

You can check our route maps to find the routes that typically have snow detours (see the Transit Guide or go to the  pages on this Web site). If your route has a standard snow detour, the map will have a snowflake icon in the map key.  Typically, routes 3, 5, 17, and 47 have sections along the route which are impassable during severe winter weather.

Dress warmly and expect delays

Road conditions affect all traffic, so buses may experience significant delays.  However, they should still continue the route unless the roads are deemed impassable.  Drivers alert dispatchers on a trip by trip basis.  To be safe, please dress warmly.

Riding tips

  • If there's no traffic going by your bus stop, walk to a stop on a busy street.
  • If your bus stop is in the middle of a hill, walk to the bottom where the Operator can safely stop.
  • Stand back from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop.
  • Keep in mind your bus may not pull all the way over to the curb, to avoid getting stuck.

Will handicap accessible services be available in snowy conditions?

Wheelchair lifts may not operate in freezing temperatures and snow and ice at bus stops can make boarding more difficult.

BC Lift will continue to operate except in areas where we determine it to be unsafe.  For information, call 607.778.4464.
